The Lagos
State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Lola Akande,
has said that the state government will soon establish an institute to train
caregivers.
Akande, who
made this known while receiving the leadership staff of the Office of the
Public Defender in her office.
The
Institute, she said, would help to curtail child abuse by untrained care givers
and afford the state government the opportunity to develop a data base of care
givers for proper monitoring (more after the cut)
“It is hoped
that when established, issues of child kidnapping by illegal nannies will be
reduced while Lagosians will also have access to data which can be used as a
guide to choose the right care giver,’’ she said.
Commending
the OPD for defending the rights of the indigent people and fostering a good
working relationship with the ministry, Akande urged them to create more
awareness on their services.
She noted
that many people, particularly the poor, were suffering in silence because they
were unaware of the free services of OPD.
Akande urged
them to take advantage of WAPA’s “WhatsApps Interactive Forum,” tagged “WAPA
Alert”, and urged them to contribute meaningfully to issues of women and
children.
Earlier, the
leader of the team and Director, Office of Public Defender, Mrs. Omotola
Rotimi, said the visit was to find ways of improving the relationship between
WAPA and OPD.
She stated
that OPD was out to defend the poor and vulnerable in the state irrespective of
sex or status with the belief that everyone should have access to justice.
